Each year, more than four million pairs of eyeglasses are discarded. Whether you are disposing a pair of eyeglasses because they are broken, out-of-style, or you need a different prescription, "recycling" your eyeglasses can make a difference to the life of someone in need of a pair of eyeglasses. In developing countries, eye care, like most kinds of health care, can be difficult to obtain. An eye examination alone, even without glasses, can cost as much as one month's wages.
To help the needy and to pursue being kind to the environment and to the society under Fuji Xerox's "Good Company" concept, we initiated an eyeglasses donation program in February 2006. The program achieved good results for having collected more than 50 pieces of eyeglasses in a very short timeframe. The donated glasses were delivered to non-profit corporations which take Hong Kong's quality superseded goods and redistribute them to people in need, locally and internationally. Some of their volunteers cleaned, tested, and sorted the donated glasses and then sent them to Yunnan and Mongolia in China and Ghana in West Africa etc for reuse.
